    Hitting the beach after losing 40 pounds had to be one of the greatest days of my life. I successfully accomplished my goal of becoming the fittest guy on the beach.


    I have never worked so hard for anything as I had done for this summer. No other endeavor in my life even comes close in the amount of mental, physical, and emotional effort I had put into getting in tip top shape. For that reason, it will be an accomplishment I’ll always cherish.


    The catalyst for my big physique transformation was undoubtedly my relationship breakup with my girlfriend just one year earlier. I can still remember the very instant she unbuckled her seatbelt, flung the car door open, got out and slammed it shut as if it were yesterday. My stomach turned violently in disappointment and my face was hot and flushed out of sheer mental anguish.


    Turn the clock back 5 months prior to that car door slam, and here’s what happened. We were both out of shape, stuck in the usual routine of coming home from work, plopping down on the couch, eating and drinking a ton of beer and food and passing out. One day I guess she’d had enough and talked me into joining the gym so we could workout together. I got caught up in work and other things, so I stopped going. She was motivated so she kept it up, and got great results.


    Apparently somewhere along the way she met some fit guy at the gym and started messing around with him. Apparently it was for a couple of months. Apparently my lazy ass put me in a real bad position and I lost out.


    Looking back now as the Monday Morning QB, I should have seen the signs and made adjustments. As I found out however, the emotion of pain can be a powerful motivator if you use it to your advantage. A lot of people have goals of getting in shape and looking great, but at the end of the day pain is definitely a stronger motivational force than pleasure. In other words, the pain of my girlfriend ripping my heart out propelled me way further and kept me on track than had we stayed together and she’d just ask me to slim down a bit. I attacked my waistline very strategically for the next few months.


    Every single day, I would write down how I wanted to look the next time she saw me, and what I had to do to achieve that look. Not because I wanted to get her back, but because I wanted to say f*ck you, I’m better than you.


    Where I live, the beach is the hot spot for picking up women. I made it my goal to walk on that beach like Brad Pitt in Fight Club.


    The time period leading up to my first day on the beach this summer was filled with self- imposed pressure, and intensity. Because I held myself to such outrageous standards, I feel confident that I’ve found the strategies and distinctions to build quality muscle and get incredibly lean with the program I was following.
